Objectives, activity types, and targeted grade levels are explained for each activity, and a list of materials is included. Grade level guidelines are suggested, although educators should make their own judgments about which are most appropriate for their classes. The activities can be used individually or as part of a study unit on bats. Before planning to use an activity, it will be useful to page through the entire book and familiarize yourself with the background information provided in all of the activities. For example, Activity 1 includes a substantial introduction to bats; Activity 2 addresses myths; Activities 7, 9 and 10 introduce bat diversity and anatomy; Activity 12 covers some of the economic benefits of bats; and bat endangerment is discussed in Activity 6. Information from several activities can be combined and educators can build presentations or programs appropriate to their specific needs. For the educator's convenience, a list on page 61 names all the activities along with the topics featured.
Every effort was taken to provide accurate information for this general-focus bat publication. With more than 1,100 bat species known to science, it is extremely difficult to generalize for all bats. Educators wishing more detailed and precise information about bat species or ecology may refer to the reading list at the end of this publication or visit BCI's website at www.batcon.org.
