The University Honors Center logo is a representation of the Golden Spiral, a logarithmic spiral related to the Golden Ratio, represented by the Greek letter Φ (phi). According to astrophysicist Mario Livio, “Biologists, artists, musicians, historians, architects, psychologists, and even mystics have pondered and debated the basis of its ubiquity and appeal. In fact, it is probably fair to say that the Golden Ratio has inspired thinkers of all disciplines like no other number in the history of mathematics.” The letter Φ is also traditionally used to abbreviate Philosophia – “The Love of Wisdom.” Many honor societies, including those supported by the University Honors Center, use Φ as part of their name and use Philosophia as their guiding principle. The design used by the University Honors Center is formed by completing each quarter-circle created when drawing a Golden Spiral.
