Notes from Digital Video Producers Meeting
May 7, 2002

We looked at the Guideline's Examples of the We're Texas video. Discussion followed. Comments: Dan Benner uses QuickTime with data rates between 90k and 800K. He thinks that's the best range for the Sorenson 3 codec. Anything above 800k, he uses a different codec. (Minerva???)

Quinn Stewart is going to encode the WindowsMedia T1 version one more time with 'Total Data Rate' set to 1mb so all 3 formats of the video will be the same. Next month we'll view the 3 videos and do a comparison. The QT version will be streaming at that time.

For 56k modem users, we'd recommend the following:

Quinn, Dan and Dana are going to send me the "Cleaner settings files" they used on the videos. I will include them into the matrix.

Cleaner is our recommendation for encoding streaming media.

Discussion on accessibility followed. Video files need to include a text tract for the hearing impaired. Quinn Stewart will conduct a session on how to incorporate a text file with a RealMedia video using SMIL and Dana Deloca or Diane Gierisch will do the same with QuickTime format. These sessions will be the first part of our meeting next month. Including a text tract will increase production time and needs to be reflected in the Guideline's Examples matrix.

DivX versions of the We're Texas video will be included in the Digitial Video Producers web site as a "Preview of MPEG4". Diane will get that information compiled and incorporated into the site.

Next was discussion on the "Digital Video Guidelines". Work will continue on that project in the following manner:

Sections on 'Accessibility' and 'Intellectual Property' will be added to the Guidelines. Any volunteers to work on either one?

Reminder: the Guidelines are just that - guidelines. We are not attempting to "teach" folks how to produce a movie, digitize it, edit it and stream it over the web. We are setting out guidelines and providing information for them on how to do the above here at UT Austin.
