A word to students...

On behalf of the faculty and staff at The University of Texas at Austin, I would like to welcome you to the university community. I have had the privilege of working on behalf of students at several fine institutions now, and if I have learned anything in my career, it is that a university teaches simply by being what it is: a community of individuals—students, faculty, and staff—who are interested in personal growth and intellectual development that reaches beyond the classroom.

One of the great things about being on a college campus is the feeling of freedom that comes from being in a place that accepts and respects so many different points of view. That is what a university is all about and that concept is integral to our mission and responsibility.

In my role as vice president, I also work with dedicated staff in the Division of Student Affairs who are committed to supporting you as you pursue your goals at the University. They are here for you, and I encourage you to ask questions and take advantage of the wide-ranging resources available to you. I strongly believe that what takes place outside the classroom has a measurable impact on classroom learning.

Once again, welcome, and warmest wishes as you pursue life as a University of Texas student.
