UT Faculty-led Programs
A UT Faculty-led Program is one that is sponsored by a UT department and led by
a UT faculty member. Course offerings for UT Faculty-led programs are listed in
the UT course schedule. Typically, the courses offered are designed by UT
faculty and taken with fellow UT-Austin students.
The type of credit earned may vary depending on the specific structure
of the UT Faculty-led program selected. In general, however, students participating in Faculty-led programs earn in-residence UT credit, just as if they were taking courses on campus in Austin. Grades earned are computed into the official
UT-Austin GPA, just as they would be for grades earned in courses taken
on campus.
Students pay regular UT tuition and fees for the Faculty-led course(s) for
which they have registered. In addition to regular UT tuition and fees, students
pay a comprehensive program fee prior to departure. A UT application fee also
may apply. Students should consult either the faculty program leader or a
C-GEO advisor for current program fees for Faculty-led programs.
UT Exchanges
UT-Austin has “Reciprocal Exchange” programs with roughly 200 of the
world’s most respected universities. These programs allow UT students
to study at the various foreign institutions with which we have formal
agreements, and in turn allow overseas students to study at UT. Generally,UT
students take regular university courses with students from their host
country. Some universities also offer a selection of courses geared
for foreign students, which may be taught in English.
Students participating in UT Exchange programs earn regular in-residence
UT credit, just as if they were taking courses on campus in Austin. All
grades earned for the courses undertaken are computed into the official
UT-Austin GPA,just as they would be for grades earned in courses taken
on campus.
UT Exchange students pay their regular UT tuition just as if they were
studying here in Austin. In addition, students are responsible for paying
for housing, food, transportation, and general costs of living in the
host country, just as a student would pay for those same expenses while
studying here in Austin. A few programs may also have a program fee.
In general, students interested in applying for an Exchange program should be of Sophmore standing and have a 3.0 GPA. Students with less than 60 hours or less than a 3.0 GPA should consult with a C-GEO Advisor for guidance.

Programs Affiliated with UT
A program Affiliated with UT is run by an organization or program provider that has an official agree-
ment with UT-Austin stating that its program or programs are approved for the
automatic transfer of credit. Each Affiliated program is different; all of them, however, are designed specifically for US students.
Students participating in these programs take many of their courses
at the Affiliate’s “institute”or “center”with other American students. Often
students with advanced language skills, however, may take university courses
at an associated university with students from the host country.
Affiliated program students may be eligible for in-residence credit; grades earned on
these programs,however,are not factored into a student’s UT GPA,though
the letter grades earned do appear on a student’s official UT transcript.
Beginning Fall 2007, the charge to register in “Affiliated Studies”
category will be $400. In addition, each Affiliate has its own published
program fee. Most Affiliates charge a comprehensive fee for participation, which
typically includes housing, food, and possibly transportation. Students
should consult the specific Affiliate’s program catalog for detailed
cost information.
Independent Study and Research
Any graduate or undergraduate student conducting independent research overseas or taking courses on a independent program is eligible for a special registration category - ISR: Independent Study and Research. This status is non credit bearing. Students registered in this category are NOT eligible for federal, state or institutional loans or grants processed by the UT Office of Student Financial Services. For additional information visit the ISR webpage.
Non UT Programs
Non-UT programs have not been evaluated or approved for academic or
programmatic quality. (This does not necessarily mean that such programs are
of low quality.) If a program is not found in our online programs database, then
it is a Non-UT program.
Students should note that UT does not allow transfer credit from all Non-
UT programs. Students should complete a “Non-UT Pre-departure Form”prior
to departure to determine credit transferability. This form can be obtained from
the C-GEO. Additionally, students who participate in a Non-UT program will be
taking a leave of absence if abroad for fall or spring, and must complete an
Application for Readmission to UT in order to reenroll upon their return.
Students receiving financial aid at UT will not be able to use their financial
aid on a Non-UT program because they will not be a registered UT student
while abroad.
