University Extension open for summer, fall registration

Ransom Center presents "On the Road with the Beats"
All day event, Harry Ransom Center. An exhibition tracing the travels of Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs and their friends across America and the globe. Manuscripts, books, photographs and visual art from the Ransom Center's collections tell the story of the Beat Generation and the literary and social revolution they inspired. The scroll manuscript of Jack Kerouac's "On the Road" will be on display Feb. 5-Aug. 3.

Creative Research Laboratory showcases work of seniors
All day event, Creative Research Lab (CRL). Beginning Saturday, May 3rd, the Creative Research Laboratory will showcase the work of seniors from the Design Division within the Department of Art and Art History. This exhibition will run three weeks and include photography, interactive design, printmaking, film, product design, typography and mixed media. The public is invited to attend this free event including the opening reception on Saturday, May 5th from 6-9 p.m. It has been said that "design is making sense of things" and this may ultimately be the best way to define such an all-encompassing practice. Students studying in this program are taught to observe and respond to the cultural, socio/economic, material, political, geographic and temporal environment. These ethical designers of the future, who will imbue our environments with depth, texture and meaning, present the culmination of their three-years of studies in this Senior Exhibition. SENIOR DESIGN EXHIBITION 2008 will feature the work of Megan Braley, Christen Collier, James Edwards, Sarah Emmons, Kristen Folkens, Lindsey Gerhard, Courtney Goode, Magera Holton, Caspar Lam, Allison Lura, Kristin Macdonough, Robin Peeples, Anna Radley, Carla Rogers, and Caroline St Romain. Creative Research Laboratory is open Tuesday through Saturday, Noon to 5 p.m.
Year-long series of events celebrates legacy of Lyndon Baines Johnson
All day event, Various locations in Texas and Washington, D.C.. On Oct. 4, organizers of the Lyndon Baines Johnson Centennial, commemorating the 100th birthday (Aug. 27, 1908) of the 36th President, announced that the official Centennial celebrations will begin Jan. 1, 2008, with a year-long tribute to the LBJ legacy. To kick off the Centennial celebrations, seven LBJ-affiliated groups and GSD&M's Idea City unveiled a Centennial logo and web site. A series of programs and events in Texas and Washington, D. C., will highlight the Centennial salute. The logo will be used by all seven organizations throughout 2008, and a comprehensive Web site with a detailed calendar, historical information, and photographs will launch Jan. 1, 2008.
Donate reusable items during Trash to Treasure Donation Drive
10 a.m., UT area dorms. From May 7-19, you can drop stuff in our bins in UT-area dorms, donate unwanted items at our program headquarters or call us at 512-232-7840 for a pickup of unwanted furniture and large items from your home. Our donation location will be confirmed soon. We accept any reusable personal items, excluding broken items, carpets, mattresses, open food, chemicals and magazines. All donations will be recycled in a campus-wide garage sale held Aug. 26. The proceeds help incoming students get low-cost goods and also raise funds for all of our environmental programs. Talk focuses on parenting adolescents and setting boundaries

The presentation includes a discussion on negotiating freedom and reasonable boundaries, identifying healthy adolescent behavior, avoiding aggressive interchanges and identifying signs of potential depression, anxiety and substance abuse. Ransom Center offers museum theater program in galleries
1 p.m., Harry Ransom Center. In conjunction with the current exhibition "On the Road with the Beats," the Harry Ransom Center presents performances in the galleries of the museum theater program "Beat Voices" every Saturday and Sunday at 1 and 3 p.m. through August 2. The series of brief plays are written, directed and performed by students in the Department of Theatre and Dance at The University of Texas at Austin. The pieces illuminate objects and people featured in the exhibition, including Beat figures Peter Orlovsky and Diane DiPrima, specific letters exchanged by Beat authors, and a painting by artist Alfred Leslie. Lavender Graduation honors achievements of LGBTQ students
4 p.m., Art Building Auditorium (1.102). Lavender Graduation is a special graduation ceremony and reception that honors the achievements of graduating lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and ally students on campus. The first Lavender Graduation took place in 1995 with a handful of students at the University of Michigan. The ceremony now takes place at many universities throughout the country and continues to grow each year.
