John M. (Mike) White
Mike White joined the faculty at the University of Texas at Austin 1966, having received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois the same year. He has served the University with great distinction over the years as professor, Department Chairman, Director NSF Science and Technology Center for Synthesis, Growth, and Analysis of Electronic Materials and Norman Hackerman Professor of Chemistry. In 2000, Professor White was named the Robert A. Welch Chair in Chemistry. Professor White's dedication to the educational mission of the university (which he believes is central) was recognized by The Jean Holloway Award for Excellence in Teaching, the University's oldest, and most prestigious, campus-wide teaching award. Professor White was a pioneer in the development of modern surface chemistry and is widely recognized as one of the handful of it's leading experts worldwide. He is the author of more than 600 scientific publications on topics that range through catalysis, photodesorption dynamics, photoassisted surface chemistry, thin film growth and electronic materials. He was the 1990 recipient of the Kendall Award of the ACS, in recognition of his contributions to surface chemistry; in 1999, he received the Southwest Regional ACS Award for his contributions to research and teaching; in 2001, he is recipient of the ACS Arthur W. Adamson Award for Distinguished Services in the Advancement of Surface Science.
