San Antonio Garage (SAG) Construction

For the week of June 23-27, the garage has been filling by 10:00 am and
remaining full through 2:00 pm

Note: The entire 3rd floor level is now open for parking!

This page is designed to provide information on the status of construction and fill times for the San Antonio Garage. It will be updated weekly. We continue to expect that as we move deeper into the summer, the demand on this garage will subside somewhat and parking will ease. Feel free to refer to this site to see when the garage has been filling over the past five days and use this to plan your trip into campus. Remember you can park in any UT garage during the summer without having to go to SAG first (see map of nearest garage). Please be advised that BRG (Brazos Garage) by Jester is used for summer freshman orientation and so it will often be congested.

3rd Floor Open for Parking

The entire 3rd floor is now open for parking. This gives SAG over 400 spaces for use.

New Lot Full Procedures
We have been able to program the computer system that controls the gates to turn on the signage at the entrances when there are no spaces. The signage used to say “Card Only”, it has been changed to “FULL”. We changed the signs on both the Nueces and the San Antonio entrances so that if you drive down Nueces, you can see whether the garage is full and you can bypass the garage and head directly to another garage.

We will be bagging all of the five-minute space signs and all but two of the ADA parking spots in the garage. You may park in any spot that has a bagged sign. Do NOT park in a sign that is not covered or a citation will be issued. We currently show two SAG permit holders with ADA needs in our system. If you are finding the ADA spots are full, contact us and we will remove the bags from another spot in order for us to accommodate you.

Project Phases

May to Mid-August

All daily, student, and share pass parking has been suspended in this garage. Only "F" permit parking is available.

During this time, construction will consist of concrete pours and shoring to add two levels to the garage. For safety reasons, several floors have to be blocked, thereby reducing the number of spaces to around 240 spaces. Utilization reports from the summer of 2007 indicated that the average daily permit use (including 100 student permits) was between 240-250 permits. The student permits were eliminated and thus, the garage was projected to be able to accommodate the summer load for "F" permit holders. Thus far, numbers this year have run higher and it has caused some congestion and parking issues. We still believe that as the summer progresses, traffic to this garage will ease somewhat and we encourage you to check the average filling time on a regular basis. Please remember that  your card is active in all UT garages through the summer.

Mid-August to February
For the fall semester, no student or share pass parking will be available. Based on occupancy levels, a very small number of daily spaces may be opened but only after we are sure this will not have a negative impact on "F" permit parking.

Construction will continue but many of the spaces out of commission will return to service.  While we expect this to happen before the  beginning of the fall semester, all construction is driven by weather, which could delay some spaces from opening. We do, however, expect to have over 500 spaces, and this should accommodate current "F" permit parking for this location.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s happening at the San Antonio Garage?

Over the course of the next several months, the San Antonio Garage is undergoing construction to add two new parking levels. The project has been in the planning stage for several months and the actual construction process will start in mid-May after the university’s commencement ceremonies. During this time, parking will be limited to exclusive use by faculty/staff permit holders of the San Antonio Garage. You can expect to see construction fences and trailers in the area, as well as concrete molds on the roof and supportive bracing throughout the garage’s existing levels. The project will wrap up with routine maintenance on the structure. Here are some frequently asked questions to shed some light on the project.

When will construction take place?
Major construction begins after commencement in May 2008, and the entire project will be complete in the late spring of 2009. General construction will take place between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., with the exception of some concrete-pouring processes during the evening.

Why is the university expanding the San Antonio Garage?

If you’re an employee, a student, or a visitor, you know there is a shortage of parking around the university. Parking and Transportation Services is trying to alleviate this shortage by adding parking spaces around the perimeter of campus. The San Antonio Garage expansion will create 315 new parking spaces, reducing the number of people on the waitlist for parking in that garage and increasing parking options on the campus perimeter.

Will the garage be shut down during construction?
Some levels of the garage will be closed during construction, but the first and second levels will always be open. More levels will open as soon as possible after the summer of 2008.

Where will I park while the garage is under construction?
The San Antonio Garage will be open throughout construction to faculty and staff with permits for the garage, but parking spaces will be limited during the summer of 2008. If you are a San Antonio Garage permit holder and you find the garage full, you will be allowed to park in any other garage on campus at no charge.
The garage will not offer student permits or visitor parking during the summer of 2008.

When can I count on parking in the garage again?
By the fall semester, enough spaces will be available to accommodate everyone who holds a “F” permit for the San Antonio Garage. Parking will still be tight at the beginning of the fall semester, though, so don’t count on parking in the garage unless you are a permit holder. More spaces will open up later in the school year, as the concrete dries and the supportive bracing is removed from the current top three levels.

Will the elevators work during construction?

Elevator improvements are part of the garage expansion project, so they will be out of service throughout construction. You’ll be able to use the stairs located at the northwest and southeast corners of the garage while the project is underway.
