Texas State University (TSU) was established in 1899 to address the state's need for excellent teachers. Throughout its rich history, TSU has responded to the changing needs of our state. Today, with an enrollment of over 26,000, TSU is a comprehensive, culturally diverse, university offering undergraduate and graduate instruction to individuals across Texas as well as those from other states and nations. TSU is also a metropolitan university, providing special service to the greater Austin-San Marcos-San Antonio region. TSU is the sixth largest public university in the state.
TSU offers 108 undergraduate degree programs, 80 master's and five doctoral programs. One quarter of the enrollment are ethnic minorities and 15 percent are graduate students. The main 427-acre campus lies along the banks of Spring Lake and the San Marcos River. Located at the foot of the Texas Hill country, TSU enjoys a setting that is unique among Texas universities. The beauty of the crystal clear San Marcos River and many sprawling cypress and pecan trees on campus add to the charm of this picturesque setting. Located 30 miles south of Austin and 50 miles north of San Antonio, San Marcos has managed to retain the charm of a smaller community. TSU encourages an atmosphere where faculty and students take the processes of teaching and learning seriously.
