Information Technology Services - Computing at U

statue Information Technology Services (ITS) is the central organization that provides UT's core computing, communications and information processing infrastructure, as well as a diverse set of services and support programs. This section will inform you about what computer resources are available, and how to access them.

UT EID (Electronic Identity)

Your UT EID gives you access to all secure services online so you can use the Web to register for classes, check your grades, get a degree audit and much more. You should have received your UT EID in your acceptance letter. If not, visit UT EID Resource Central at https://idmanager.its.utexas.edu/eid_self_help/.

Individually Funded (IF) Account

You will need to sign up for an individually funded (IF) account to use services such as campus printing and Telesys, UT's dial-up Internet Service Provider. Any charges you accrue for computer usage will be charged to this account. Signing up for this account is free; you will only be charged for the services you use. To sign up for a personal computer account, go to http://www.utexas.edu/its/account/index.php.

Prepaid accounts are required to use some ITS services, such as printing, Resnet, Telesys and advanced system disk storage. For a prepaid account, go to https://utdirect.utexas.edu/its/account/prepaid_account.WBX.

E-mail and Webmail

All UT Students, faculty and staff may obtain a free e-mail address on the UMBS server (mail.utexas.edu). Through this e-mail address you can receive information from the University as well as specific materials and assignments from professors. You may forward this account to one that you have previously established, such as AOL and Hotmail. Webmail, at http://www.utexas.edu/its/webmail/index.php allows you to access both university and off-campus e-mail servers using a Web browser.

UT Direct

UT Direct is your personal Web interface for university business and online course sites. Customize your own personal page to access e-mail, pay your fee bill, renew library books, and track news and events, at https://utdirect.utexas.edu/utdirect/index.WBX.

Internet Services

Resnet is the campus residential network that provides an Internet connection through an Ethernet port in UT residence halls.

Telesys is a modem system that provides dial-up access to the Internet and allows full off-campus access to University computing resources.

Wireless and wired authenticated access to Utnet, the campus network is available in many buildings and common areas across campus.

Computer Labs

All students can use computers in the General Libraries and the Student Microcomputer Facility (SMF) http://www.utexas.edu/smf/. The SMF, located in the Flawn Academic Center (FAC), is a large computer lab with Macintosh and Dell Computers, scanners, laser printers, color printers and many software applications. All computers have access to e-mail and Internet resources.

To log in, you will need an ITS computer account (personal or departmental) valid for the Print Relay System.

Many departments and UT residence halls provide computer labs exclusively for their students. Some of these--for example, the Welch Microcomputer Facility and the Communication Computer Center--are also available to the general UT population during certain hours.

Printing

The Print Relay System (PRS) server enables remote printing in the SMF, campus computer labs, offices and residence halls. You must have an individually funded (IF) account to use PRS.

Software

Both the Campus Computer Store and Software Distribution and Sales offer low-cost software. The Microsoft Campus Enterprise Agreement software such as Microsoft Office costs only $5--$10 per CD in the CD set.

BevoWare

BevoWare provides the software you need to protect your computer from viruses, improve the security of your connections, browse the Web, read and send e-mail, use the campus printing system and more. BevoWare is available for free download online.

WebSpace

WebSpace is a file storage system that provides 150 megabytes of disk space to UT students, faculty and staff. You can use your space to store copies of important documents-for example, homework, notes, papers, theses, dissertations, and graphics. In addition to storing private files, you may also use this space to publish a personal home page.

Computer Training

ITS Training provides opportunities to acquire information technology skills and knowledge through short courses, individual consulting, and special classes for students, faculty and staff.

Visit the ITS Training Web site for more information.

ITS Help Desk

The ITS Help Desk provides computer assistance to all current UT students, faculty and staff and should normally be your first stop when you need help with campus computing. For computing questions, contact the ITS Help Desk by phone at 475-9400 or online.

To learn more about computing at UT, visit the Information Technology Resource Central at http://www.utexas.edu/computer, and the ITS web site at http://www.utexas.edu/its/.
