Outstanding Dissertation Award

ANNOUNCEMENT

DATE: February 18, 2008
TO: Chairs of Graduate Studies Committees
FROM: Victoria E. Rodríguez
Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies
SUBJECT: Outstanding Thesis and Dissertation Awards, 2007-2008
-Nomination and Abstract Deadline:  Friday, March 28, 2008

I am pleased to announce a call for nominations for the 2008 Outstanding Thesis and Dissertation Awards. As in the past, your assistance in identifying and nominating theses and dissertations that merit recognition for excellence in scholarship, research, and writing will be greatly appreciated.

Each of the three winners of the thesis category will receive a $3000 prize. Each of the three dissertation winners will receive $4000. In addition, this is the inaugural year for the Michael H. Granof Outstanding Graduate Student Award, which will confer an additional $10,000 upon one of the recipients of the four student awards.

All graduate student awards will be presented at the Graduate School/University Co-op Awards Banquet on May 14, 2008. Supervising professors will be invited to the ceremony and recognized with their students. The Graduate School awards and the banquet are very generously underwritten by the University Co-op.

Each graduate program may nominate one dissertation and one thesis. Each student nominated for a Thesis or Dissertation Award may simultaneously be considered for the Granof Outstanding Graduate Student award. To be considered for both awards, nominators must complete the Granof nomination form and include it with the Thesis or Dissertation Award nomination.

This year, to allow as much time as possible for May graduates to complete their dissertations and theses, we have established a two-part submission schedule. Only the abstract and related nomination materials are required on March 28. Each award review team will determine its top nominees based on the abstracts. The top ranked nominees will be contacted to submit their full dissertations or theses by April 14.

Complete information regarding nomination criteria and submission guidelines, as well as lists of past award recipients, can be found at http://www.utexas.edu/ogs/awards/. Complete nomination packets must be received at the Graduate School by 5:00 p.m. March 28 to be considered. Please direct nomination packets and questions to:
