George H. Mitchell Award for Excellence in Graduate Research

Award Winners

The Graduate School and University Co-op will present three awards of $3,000 each to outstanding graduate students for the pursuit and achievement of excellence in research. (Each award carries entitlement to pay in-state tuition for 2008-2009.) For the purpose of these awards, research is interpreted broadly and applicants will be judged on the basis of outstanding contributions to their field of study. Research or writing must be substantially in progress.

Eligibility

All graduate students (master's or doctoral level) are eligible to apply if they: a) are currently enrolled in The University of Texas at Austin; b) are in good academic standing; and c) will be enrolled full or half-time (unless they are in doctoral candidacy) at the university during the 2008-2009 academic year.

Application Requirements

The application must include a total of four copies each of the following documents: a completed application form, a cover letter, and a curriculum vita. A complete application must also include four copies of sealed letter of recommendation. (See below for details.)

Application Form

The Application Form is prepared in .pdf format (requires Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 or newer - download free Reader). The form can be filled out onscreen and then printed or a blank form can be printed and then completed.

Cover Letter

The applicant's cover letter should not exceed one page and the body of the letter should not exceed 300 words (exceeding 300 words will jeopardize the application). The letter should clearly summarize the applicant's research project and his/her qualifications for the award. The summary should describe the importance and significance of the applicant's research project in language easily understood by a general audience.  The cover letter is the applicant's opportunity to make a case for receiving the award. The cover letter should be addressed to:

Curriculum Vita

The applicant's curriculum vita (or resume) should clearly summarize his/her academic career and achievements. It should include publications, awards received, and other significant accomplishments, if applicable.  The CV should not exceed 3 pages.

Letter of Recommendation

Each application must include four copies of letter of recommendation from a professor who is familiar with the applicant's research project and abilities.  The letters must be submitted in sealed envelopes, signed across the back.

The deadline for submission is 5 p.m. Friday, February 22, 2008. Winners will be notified in March, 2008, and also will be listed on this web site.

Awards will be presented at the Graduate School / University Co-op Awards Banquet on May 14, 2008.
