Graduate Research Assistants (GRA)
GRA are graduate students who assist faculty/administration with research duties. These positions are most often funded out of research grants.

Students interested in seeking a GRA position should contact the faculty member in your area of interest.
After you have been offered a position, please go to the LBJ School Personnel Office to complete employment paperwork and provide identification and work eligibility documents by the third day of work.

- Pay
The minimum full-time 12 month rate is $25,368. At the minimum rate, a 10 hour a week GRA for the fall or spring semester pays about $2,378 and a 20 hour a week position pays about $4,757 a semester. Actual rates will depend on education and relevant work experience. Normally, fall appointments begin on September 1 and end on January 15. Spring appointments begin on January 16 and end on May 31.
Teaching Assistants (TA)
TA are graduate students who assist faculty with teaching courses. Duties may include teaching a class, grading, tutoring, etc.
Student Technician Employment*
(Student Non-Academic Employment)
Student Technicians perform non-academic duties. They assist in different areas of the LBJ School performing such functions as IT related tasks; updating information on the website; assisting with school special events planning, setup and other project-based work; reconciling accounts; scanning and cataloguing documents; developing ideas and content for brief feature stories and graphics; etc.
Each year the LBJ School hires students to work part-time during the fall and spring semesters. The positions are a good way to earn extra money and help to contribute to the mission of the School.

Interested students should send a resume and a letter of interest to LBJdeansoffice@austin.utexas.edu. If you have questions, contact Dean Patterson at 471-3200. After you have been offered a position, please go to the LBJ School Personnel Office to complete employment paperwork and provide identification and work eligibility documents by the third day of work.
- Pay
A 10 hour a week position for the fall semester pays about $2,091 and the spring semester pays about $2,4668/12/08 4:47 PM. For the fall semester, the start date is September 1 and the end date is the last class day of the semester. For the spring semester. the start date is January 16 and the end date is the last class day of the semester.
How to hire a student Employee (for hiring supervisors)
All requests for TA appointments must go through the Graduate Program Coordinator II. All other requests can be submitted to the LBJ Personnel Office by email to lbjhr@uts.cc.utexas.edu. Please include the following information in the email or by completing the Request for Appointment form. **Please note that effective October 1, 2001, tuition remission for graduate research assistants will be required on all grant proposals and contracts, unless the sponsor does not allow tuition remission (see attached pdf document).
