Passport FAQ
What is the difference between the Passport Book
(standard passport) and the Passport Card?
The Passport Book is valid for travel by air, land, or sea.
The Passport Card is valid for travel only by land or sea
and cannot be used to travel by air. Production of the Passport
Card began in the summer of 2008 to expedite document processing
at U.S. land and sea ports-of-entry when arriving from Canada,
Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.
Where can I find a First-Time Passport Application?
First-time passport applicants will complete and submit
Form DS-11, which you can find at http://travel.state.gov/passport/forms/ds11/ds11_842.html. Your
best option is to fill it out early, except for your signature,
and bring it to Passport Day.
How do I renew my passport?
Bring the materials requested above, as well as your old
passport. When you arrive at the event, you will complete
and submit Form DS-11, which you can find at http://travel.state.gov/passport/forms/ds11/ds11_842.html.
Your best option is to fill it out early, except for your
signature, and bring it to Passport Day.
What if my passport was lost or stolen?
Complete everything and bring all materials as if applying
for a new passport. The additional form to report a lost
or stolen passport will be available on-site on Passport
Day.
How long will it take to receive my passport?
Routine Service passports are received approximately 4-6
weeks from the time of application. Expedited Service passports
are received 10-14 working days from the time of application.
How long is a passport valid, and when should I renew my passport?
If you were sixteen or older when the passport was issued,
then your passport is valid for ten years. If you were fifteen
or younger when the passport was issued, then your passport
is valid for five years.
If possible, you should renew your passport approximately
nine months before it expires. Some countries require that
your passport be valid at least six months beyond the date
of your trip. Some airlines will not allow you to board
if this requirement is not met.
I cannot attend Passport Day. How can I apply for a U.S. passport
on my own?
