| What You Do | What You Hear |
|---|---|
| 1) Lift the handset from the cradle. | Dial Tone |
| 2) Dial the last five digits of the number. | Ringing |
Note: These last five digits are referred to as the "station number" in the instructions which follow.
Making Local Calls
(All numbers in the local calling area except campus numbers.)
| What You Do | What You Hear |
|---|---|
| 1) Lift the handset from the cradle. | Dial Tone |
| 2) Dial "9" plus the desired number. | Ringing |
Note: During periods of heavy telephone use, for instance inclement weather, you may hear a queuing tone or queuing announcement after dialing the number. Stay on the line. The system is looking for a free line and will place your call as soon as one becomes available.
Calling Toll-free Numbers
You do not have to use an authorization code to call an "800" number from Class A or B campus phones. Using an authorization code will cause you to be billed for the call.
| What You Do | What You Hear |
|---|---|
| 1) Lift the handset from the cradle. | Dial Tone |
| 2) Dial "9" + "1" + "800" + Number. | Ringing |
Note: Any 3-digit toll-free number will work (e.g., "800", "888").
Making Long Distance Calls
University Authorization Codes, Domestic Calls
| What You Do | What You Hear |
|---|---|
| 1) Lift the handset from the cradle. | Dial Tone |
| 2) Dial "8". | Stutter Dial Tone |
| 3) Dial your long distance authorization code. | Second Dial Tone |
| 4) After second dial tone begins, dial Area Code + phone number. Do not dial a "1" before the area code. | Ringing |
Notes:
- Entering a "#" after dialing the authorization code will eliminate the wait for a second dial tone.
- Entering a "#" after dialing the long distance number will shorten call set up time.
- If all the outgoing lines are busy, you will hear a distinct tone (queuing tone) or recorded announcement (queuing announcement) indicating your call is in queue. Continue holding. The system will complete your call as soon as a line becomes free.
University Authorization Codes, International Calls
It is possible to dial international station-to-station calls using your University authorization code. However, this capability will be assigned to individual authorization codes by departmental request only.
| What You Do | What You Hear |
|---|---|
| 1) Lift the handset from the cradle. | Dial Tone |
| 2) Dial "8". | Stutter Dial Tone |
| 3) At the stutter dial tone, dial your long distance authorization code. | Second Dial Tone |
| 4) After second dial tone begins, dial "011" + country code + city code + local number. If you are using a touchtone telephone, dial "#" to eliminate a ten-second wait. | Ringing |
Notes:
- International person-to-person calls require a long distance calling card and operator assistance.

Personal Calling Cards and Credit Cards
Domestic Calling Card Calls:
Follow the instructions on the back of your personal calling card, OR:
- Dial "9" + "0" + area code + number + "0" and wait for instructions.
- Give the operator your calling card or credit card number, OR:
- Follow the instructions to enter the calling card or credit card number yourself (must be using a touch-tone telephone).
International Calling Card Calls:
Dial "9" + "01" + country code + city code + local
number. An operator will come on the line to assist you.
Notes:
- All University phones automatically access AT&T for calling card and collect calls. To use another long distance carrier, the caller may dial "9" + "10XXX" + "0" + area code + phone number. The "10XXX" is the carrier's access number with XXX representing the carriers unique three-digit code. For example, AT&T's access number is "10288". Some carriers also provide access through "800" or "950" numbers. Contact your long distance company for its access number(s).
- For AT&T rate information, dial "9" + "0" + "0" or visit our Long Distance Rates page.
Calling Collect
- Dial "9" + "0" + desired area code and number.
- Give the Operator the number to call, the name of the person you are calling, and your name.
Third-number-billed Calls
- Dial "9" + "0"
- Give the operator the number to which the call will be billed.
Notes:
- There are restrictions on third-number billed calls. If you need to make calls which are charged to your home phone, it may be more convenient to request a "Calling Card" from the telephone company. There is no charge for the card, and calling card calls are less expensive than third-number or collect calls. AT&T Calling Cards for official University business (see above) may be obtained through your department by contacting Telephone Services (1-5711).
- You may not third-number bill any calls to a University telephone number.
