Connecting Securely to austin.utexas.edu using WebDAV (Mac OS X 10.2 and 10.3)
NOTE: WebDAV limits file transfers to 2 GB in size. If you need to transfer larger files to austin.utexas.edu, use SFTP.
If you have subscribed to Data Storage on austin.utexas.edu (disk.austin.utexas.edu ) and you use your disk space on the Austin domain to store files, publish Web pages or use Windows Terminal Services from a campus computer, you can use the WebDAV protocol to access Austin disk files securely from off-campus. This type of access, sometimes referred to as "opening a share," is available to students, faculty and staff at The University of Texas at Austin.
Opening a WebDAV share in Mac OS X (10.2 and 10.3.x)
To use WebDAV on Mac OS X 10.3 and earlier, you must install an additional program. These instructions describe the use of a program called Goliath that is available from BevoWare.
- Download Goliath from the BevoWare site and install it according to the instructions.
- Open the File menu and select New Connection.
- In the URL field, enter the following URL, replacing eid with your UT EID:
https://webdav.austin.utexas.edu/eid
NOTE: If you are using a bulk mount, enter the following path instead, replacing bulkmount with the name of your bulk mount:
https://webdav.austin.utexas.edu/bulkmounts/bulkmount
- In the User Name and Password fields, enter your UT EID and password. Click OK. The program opens a new window displaying the contents of your disk share and you are ready to work with your files.
- If you are using a secured personal computer, you can save your WebDAV connection to your computer desktop or any other folder. Do not do this step on a public or shared computer. To save your connection, open the File menu and select Save Connection As.
- In the Save As field, enter the connection name. If you don't specify a name, then the name used by default is your UT EID in the form "eid on webdav.austin.utexas.edu."
- When you have finished working with your files, you must close the window or exit from Goliath. That terminates the connection in a way that prevents other people from getting access to your files.
Note: If you use a public or shared computer, do not save your connection as described in steps 5 and 6.
The next time you want to connect to your disk shares, you can click on the icon and enter your UT EID and password when prompted.
