--August 29, 2007--

The software contract with SAS Inc. is moving to a new licensing model for Fiscal Year 2007-2008. Due to ongoing contract negotiations and legal review, SAS renewals will be delayed this year. We do not have an estimate on when the contract will be finalized because it is in the beginning stages of legal review. The vendor has assured us that the current software will continue to work through November 30, 2007. The software will begin sending expiration warning messages 45 days after the contract expiration date. This means that you should start receiving error messages on October 15th. Software Distribution and Sales (SDS) will send SAS users an update on the contract status before October 15th.

We apologize for any inconvenience, but rest assured that SDS is doing all we can to expedite this process. At this time we cannot provide you with product pricing for FY 07-08 because of ongoing contract negotiations. As soon as we have final numbers from the vendor, we will post the new prices on our Web site.

Please visit the News and Updates section of our Web site for up to date information. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at software@its.utexas.edu. We value your relationship with us and we look forward to working with you in FY07-08.

--August 13, 2007--

Due to an increase in our vendor costs, pricing for SPSS for MAC will increase for FY 07-08. The price for Base, Advance and Regression Modules (BAR) will increase from $165 to $241 and Base and All Modules (BALL) will increase from $315 to $548.

--August 8, 2007--

Due to declining demand, SDS will no longer administer the Tripwire site license. If you an existing license holder, you may still renew your licenses through ITS Purchasing. If you wish to renew, please send an e-mail to software@its.utexas.edu with the number of licenses and the financial account number you wish to use.

Renewal information for Fiscal Year 2007-2008.

The following information has been sent to all current SAS licensees.

Our contract with SAS Institute expires August 31, 2007.

The new contract no longer includes unlimited copies for personal computers. Each computer running or accessing SAS must be licensed.

As we transition to the new SAS program, one area that may be heavily affected are your student labs and similar light duty usage areas. Unlike many vendors, SAS does NOT have a concurrent licensing method for university desktop/laptop computers. You can not buy 20 PC licenses and deploy them concurrently into a student lab of 100 computers and control the concurrent access via key server (or related) technology. If your labs or departments are using this approach now, your alternatives are:

  • license ALL desktop/laptop computers that may run SAS during the year;
  • license the server version of SAS and deploy it in a terminal services environment; in this case your license cost is determined by the number of physical processors in your server; note: multi-core processors are treated as one unit
  • license the server version of SAS and deploy it in a virtual server environment on the server; in this case your license cost is determined by the number of physical processors in your server; note: multi-core processors are treated as one unit
  • use Softricity Softgrid technology from Microsoft for virtual application serving where the product is never installed on the desktop/laptop. If deployed in thin client mode (e.g., use from a web browser) you will license by the number of processors in the server. If deployed in non thin client mode, license by the maximum virtual processor count allowed.
  • use Enterprise Guide and Integration Technologies that are included in the product bundle to network lab PCs to a server in thin client mode. SAS technical support could provide assistance with this configuration.
  • ITS and the Division of Statistics also offer SAS on Windows Timesharing System. Students, faculty, and staff at The University of Texas at Austin may obtain timesharing access to this software by adding an optional service to your ITS Computer Account (formerly if account). For information on accessing mathematical and statistical software on the ITS Windows Terminal Server, please see http://www.utexas.edu/its/rc/answers/general/gen36.html.

Feel free to contact software@its.utexas.edu to discuss these alternatives.

Note: SDS has not determined pricing for next fiscal year.

In addition, we will no longer offer the following platforms: 64-bit Enabled AIX, Open VMS Alpha, and Macintosh.

The product bundle included with SAS will change.

The following modules are no longer included but will be available for an additional fee:

  • SAS/ACCESS Interface to R3 Software
  • SAS/Enterprise Reporter Software
  • SAS/INTRNET Software

The following modules are no longer included:

  • SAS IT Resource Management Client
  • SAS/Warehouse Administrator Software

The following modules are new to the product bundle and will be included.

  • SAS Enterprise Guide
  • SAS Bridge for ESRI

Each installation of SAS be classified into one of two purpose categories.

SDS has categorized all current licenses into one of these categories. If, during the renewal period, you disagree with our categorization, please contact us.

  • Teaching & Research: As defined by SAS, is software used for purposes of classroom instruction, academic research, and course work primarily related to customer's post-secondary degree requirements, including the formulation of theses and dissertations. Used by students, faculty, and staff supporting such use.
  • Administrative Purposes: As defined by SAS, is software used for purposes directly related to customer's operations as a post-secondary degree granting institution. This includes institutional research and any such use related to reporting about the University to the University. Such software may be used by customer's administrative employees (including faculty performing administrative duties) for such administrative purposes.

Version of SAS currently in use

Under the new licensing model, SAS offers only two versions for PC’s: 8.2 and 9.1.3. If you are currently running any version prior to these releases, please plan to upgrade.

It the responsibility of the licensee to determine this information as accurately as possible so that SDS can continue to offer the most suitable products.

You can view your licenses by using your UT Electronic ID to login into MySDS.

--July 2007--

SDS is still in negotiations regarding FY2007-2008 licenses for the upcoming fiscal year. Renewal notifications will be sent by mid August. Current program participants should receive renewal information via e-mail to the address they provided SDS at the time they purchased software. If renewals have been sent for products that you have purchased, you can renew your licenses through MySDS.

SDS will NOT invoice you for your purchase. UT Austin Departments - All orders placed in TXShop now until August 31, 2007 at noon WILL be processed against FY2006-2007 funds. If you do NOT want these charges to be processed with FY2006-2007 funds, please contact SDS.
