SafeBoot Whole-Disk Encryption Project

Overview

If you are in a department at a UT Systems institution other than UT Austin, refer to the SafeBoot product page for information about purchasing options.

Many university faculty and staff members work with Category-I data on a regular basis using their laptops or tablet PCs. While the portability of these devices is ideal for working on-the-go, it also makes the computers easy to lose or steal.

Information Technology Services (ITS) is working with the Information Security Office (ISO) to find a solution to protect the data on these devices to help UT Austin comply with UT System Information Resources Use and Security Policy (UTS-165), Section 11.3, and UT System Security Practice Bulletin #1 (SPB-1). SPB-1 requires that portable computing devices storing Category-I data must be encrypted, in case laptops or tablet PCs are lost or stolen.

After researching several options, ITS has chosen to use SafeBoot, a solution that uses a log-in password and encryption of the entire hard drive to prevent unauthorized access to or use of laptops and tablet PCs. This project will implement SafeBoot as a central service to the university.

Goals

  • Provide faculty and staff with a whole-disk encryption solution that includes recoverability for portable computers that store or access Category-I data
  • Create an online application for installation and set-up
  • Offer seamless support for SafeBoot end users

Scope

  • Deploy SafeBoot as a centrally managed and funded whole-disk encryption solution for Windows Vista and Windows XP laptops and tablet PCs
  • Provide timely online documentation as the project progresses, ending with a service sub-site that includes installation, set-up, and recovery processes, and training for SafeBoot Technical Support Staff

Please note that the project scope does NOT include:

  • Incorporating single sign-on functionality using UT EID authentication
  • Testing SafeBoot encryption algorithms
  • Providing whole-disk encryption solutions for non-Windows Vista/XP operating systems, flash devices, external hard drives, or other handheld mobile devices
