License Activation Procedures for Windows

Beginning with SPSS v13.0 and later for Windows, SPSS Inc. has changed the way that the software is licensed is installed and activated. SPSS users should consult the Help before proceeding with installation.

SPSS Software licenses are leased on a fiscal year basis. License fees grant you the Right To Use (RTU) the software for the current fiscal year which runs from September 1 through August 31 of the following calendar year. Each SPSS license leased from SDS entitles you to install SPSS software on one (1) computer only. Sharing of licenses, either by using a central key server (in a lab environment, for example) or by purchasing one license and installing the software at work and at home (work-at-home use) are not permitted. License fees are not pro-rated, and do not include installation media.

Departments may purchase the software for installation on University-owned computers; faculty, Staff, and Students can purchase the software for use on personally-owned computers.

Grad Pack

Graduate students enrolled at UT Austin can also check with the UT Austin Campus Computer Store for availability of a four-year licensed version of SPSS. This version available through the store is a boxed copy and allows you to use the software for four years without having to renew license fees annually.

It does not, however, entitle you to upgrades, and is only available with SPSS Base plus Advanced and Regression Modules. Please see the Campus Computer Store for pricing and availability.

Using SPSS on Windows Terminal Services

Students, faculty and staff at The University of Texas at Austin may obtain timesharing access to this software by subscribing to Windows Terminal Services. For more information, refer to How do I access mathematical and statistical software using Windows Terminal Service?

Updates and Upgrades

In general, updates/upgrades are available to currently registered users for the cost of duplication and media. ITS will send announcements to current users whenever a new version is available through ITS. SDS only distributes the latest release in the software.

Current program members can upgrade their software, for the cost of media alone using TXShop.
