Use of Encryption on the Public Network
You should be extremely cautious about your activities when you are on any wireless network. ITS recommends that you use applications that encrypt their data using standards such as https, ssh, etc., as you would on your home network. UT Direct and university Web pages containing confidential information, for example, encrypt all their data. Never enter personal information in an IM chat or a Web page that is not secured using "https."
See the ITS National Cyber Security Awareness Month materials for tips on protecting yourself on the Internet.
ITS provides VPN software for those who are working off campus and need to connect securely to on-campus network servers or other resources. This software encrypts the data between your computer and the university network.
'restricted.utexas.edu'
The 'restricted.utexas.edu' wireless network employs TKIP (Temporal Key Integrity Protocol) encryption on the wireless portion of the connection. Once your data moves from the wireless portion of the university's network to the wired portion, it is no longer encrypted.
'guest.utexas.edu' and the Wired Public Network
The wired Public Network and 'guest.utexas.edu' wireless network do not encrypt connections.
