Premium UT (Exchange) E-mail

What's the difference between BlackBerry, ActiveSync, and Outlook Mobile Access?

ITS offers two ways to access your Premium e-mail account from a mobile device. Each has advantages and disadvantages. Each method requires a mobile device and a data plan from your wireless service provider (such as AT&T, Nextel, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon, etc.).

Austin BlackBerry Service

Austin BlackBerry Service uses a proprietary, secure protocol to transmit data back and forth between the server and your mobile BlackBerry device. This allows you to stay connected and fully synchronized with your Premium e-mail and calendar data wherever you have cellular coverage. This solution is ideal for those who are frequently on the go and need to stay closely connected to their office throughout the day. Austin BlackBerry Service allows you to maintain that important connection without the problems and security concerns of desktop synchronization software.

Advantages

  • Ease of use, simple device configuration
  • Secure proprietary protocol used for data transmission
  • Lost devices can be disabled and data erased

Disadvantages

  • Only works with BlackBerry devices
  • Austin BlackBerry Service subscription required

ActiveSync on Smartphone Devices

ActiveSync is an industry standard protocol which provides access to your:

  • Inbox
  • Calendar
  • Tasks
  • Contacts

It allows synchronization of your Smartphone device with the server. Since this information is stored on your device, you can access it when outside your wireless provider's coverage area.

Advantages

  • No cost from ITS
  • Offline access to downloaded data
  • Access to Outlook tasks

Disadvantages

  • Higher amount of data transferred to device (contact your wireless service provider for details of your data plan)
  • More memory required on mobile device

Outlook Mobile Access on Smartphone Devices

Outlook Mobile Access (OMA) was the equivalent of Outlook Web Access for Smartphones without ActiveSync. In spring 2008, ITS upgraded Premium UT E-mail to Microsoft Exchange 2007. However, Microsoft discontinued support for OMA with Exchange 2007.
