Console Description

The UT-LabMan Console display offers lab staff and administrators a large amount of information at a glance. The areas of the Console display seen above are described below.

The Lab Map

Usually the most prominent area is the lab map. Displayed here are all workstations arranged to match the physical layout of the lab. Color and other attributes indicate each station's status:

  • Colors: The color of the rectangle indicates the station status. Most stations above are in use (cyan/light blue). Other states are Available (green), Assigned (dark blue), Auto-Assigned (magenta/pink), Repair Reserved (red), and Unavailable (gray).
  • Adornments: Adornments appear inside the station rectangle. A large yellow square indicates the user has requested help. A small red square in the lower right-hand corner indicates a rebuilding workstation. A diagonal line indicates the workstation currently cannot accept assignments. A small gray square in the upper left-hand corner indicates a Client status update is long overdue.
  • Borders: Stations rectangles generally have a solid border. Dotted line borders indicate stations that do not show up on the WaitList display. In this lab, a 3 x 5 group of these is a small training room. The others are workstations in staff offices.

The Assignments List

The area in blue is the assignments list. Each assigned station is listed here along with the assigned user's login ID and time remaining before the assignment expires. Each of these entries correspond to a dark blue status rectangle in the lab map.

The Help Requests List

The area in yellow is the help requests list. The station and brief description of the question are listed here, along with the time elapsed since the request was submitted. A lab staff consultant can click on the entry to mark it "taken" before walking over to that station.

The Status Bar

The information along the bottom edge of the window is the status bar. On the left side are counts of stations with status of Unavailable ("Down"), Available ("Free"), In Use, requesting help, and total number of users waiting on all waiting lists. To the right of that is a two-headed arrow that blinks as the Console communicates with the Server. The next blank indicates whether the lab is currently restricted to departmental list users (here it is not).

The Title Bar

The title bar displays the name of the lab and total number of stations defined for that lab.
