Getting Started with ITS
Prospective Students: Technology at UT
We are excited about your interest in The University of Texas at Austin! Being a student here gives you opportunities to expand your knowledge, learn new skills, meet new people and prepare yourself to make a difference in our world. Information Technology Services (ITS) hopes you become a Longhorn. We want you to know about a few technology resources ITS offers to enhance your student experience at the university.
Wireless Acess
The university has one of the largest wireless networks of any institution of higher education in the United States. This means wireless Internet access is available to almost all areas of campus. Whether you are studying in the Texas Union or relaxing on the grasses of the South Mall, you’ll be able to stay connected from your laptop or mobile device.
ITS Help Desk
If you need help with a computer question or run into a technical problem, the ITS Help Desk is available for consultation through e-mail, phone or walk-in. For especially troublesome issues, or to get your system tuned up, the Computer Drop-off Service at the Campus Computer Store provides a convenient, low-cost service.
Computer Labs and Laptop Checkout
You’ll find a lot of computer labs on campus, some managed by ITS and some managed by departments and colleges. Many of the labs are available 24 hours a day so you can check e-mail between classes, finish up schoolwork or print class materials when you are on campus. The computer lab in the Flawn Academic Center even allows you to check out a laptop for daily personal use.
Student Jobs
ITS is a great place for students to find part-time, on-campus jobs with a flexible work schedule and the opportunity to gain real professional experience. If you are interested in customer service and technology, the ITS Help Desk allows you to assist students, faculty and staff with their technical needs. Other ITS student jobs include computer lab proctor, student programmer and student technician in the Information Security Office. For some students these positions can even lead to full-time jobs upon graduation.
Campus Computer Store
The Campus Computer Store offers students enrolled at the university exclusive discounts on Apple and Dell computers, popular software and a variety of computer accessories. Parents and grandparents also qualify for academic discounts that can mean big savings on graduation and off-to-school purchases. If your Apple or Dell products need repair, the Campus Computer Store also serves as an authorized service provider.
Every student on campus is eligible for the services ITS provides. Some schools and colleges, including Cockrell School of Engineering, College of Education, McCombs School of Business, School of Architecture, and School of Information also provide their students with additional resources and requirements, such as custom e-mail addresses and laptop specifications. Be sure to check with the schools you are interested in to see what else may be offered.
