Configuring and Securing OS X Mail

  1. Open OS X Mail.
  2. From the Mail menu, select Preferences.
  3. Select the Accounts icon.
  4. In the bottom left corner, click the + option to create a new account.
  5. In the Account Information tab, enter the following information:
    • Select the Account Type from the drop-down list. (Choose either IMAP or POP depending on how you want to define your account.)
    • Enter a description for your account in the Description field.
    • Enter your basic e-mail address in the Email Address field.
    • Enter your name in the Full Name field.
    • Enter mail.utexas.edu in the Incoming Mail Server field.
    • Enter your e-mail name (the part of your basic e-mail address before the @ sign) in the User Name field.
    • Enter the password for your e-mail account in the Password field.
    • Confirm that the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) is set to mail.utexas.edu, then click the Server Settings button.
  6. In the SMTP Server Options dialog, enter "587" in the Server port field.
  7. In the SMTP Server Options dialog box, check Use Secure Socket Layer (SSL).
  8. In the Authentication drop-down list, select Password.
  9. Enter your basic e-mail mailbox name in the User Name field.
  10. Enter your password in the Password field.
  11. Click OK to dismiss the SMTP Server Options dialog box.
  12. Close the Accounts dialog box.

    NOTE: Send a test e-mail from another account to your basic e-mail account to make sure everything works.
