Be a UTemp

Looking to work your way into the university? Working with UTemps is a great way to get hired.

Our goal is to provide temporary employment opportunities for you to experience various university positions. Working as a temporary employee gives you the prior university experience that most departments list on their postings. Plus, a network of contacts that can assist you when you apply for open positions is an advantage.

Types of Positions Offered

Though most of the temporary positions available with the university are administrative/clerical types, UTemps employees are needed in many areas:

  • Administrative/clerical (typing and spelling test recommended)
  • Web development
  • Database development/report writing
  • Network administration/software development and maintenance
  • Programming
  • Accounting, advising and other professions

How to Apply for UTemps

Searching

The listing of positions UTemps is currently recruiting for is available by using the university job search. UTemps listings will be included among other university listings. Simply enter any of the words UTemps, UTemp or Temporary in the job title field and select the "Search for Jobs" button to display the posting of current UTemps positions. A temporary opening will look something like the following example

Specifics, such as hiring department, title and hours will vary. If there are no UTemps positions listed, this means UTemps is not currently recruiting for applicants for its pool or for a specific position. Note: Not all UTemps positions are posted.

If you don't find any temporary listings you're interested in, check back. New listings may show up at any time, on any workday. Temporary jobs will stay open only as long as new applicants are needed. These postings may close at any time.

Applying

You use the same application for UTemps positions as for regular vacancies at the university. Remember, a valid EID is required to access the online system. If you're new to the online job application or need assistance, please see "applying for employment".

Only apply for jobs for which you're qualified and that meet your interests. The UTemps Coordinator will review your application materials only if you've followed the application instructions and you meet the position requirements. If you're selected for an interview, you'll be contacted using the information you provide on your application.

All UTemps positions are security sensitive, and a conviction background check will be conducted on applicants selected for UTemps jobs.

Directions

Find a map and directions to the UTemps office here.

Assignment length

The length of each UTemp assignment varies. The "projected ending date" is flexible and many temporary assignments are extended. However, each job placement is a separate action and you aren't guaranteed another position. When your assignment is completed you'll have to compete for the next available position.

If a department is recruiting for a vacancy and you meet the requirements for that job, the you may be eligible to compete for the job vacancy with all of those who apply. Your demonstrated skills and work record as a UTemp can be considered by hiring managers.

Starting

You'll begin as soon as your department needs you, which could be the next day.

Pay rate

The current minimum hourly pay rate is $11.01 an hour. Salary will vary depending on the level of the job and the skills required.

Parking

With each assignment, you'll be offered a chance to purchase a temporary "A" parking permit from Parking and Transportation Services. This will allow you to park in any "A" permit spot on campus. The permit is good for one month from the date of purchase.

Dress

Since you're being evaluated, you should dress professionally. This could include business attire as established by your hiring department or casual attire, such as slacks, shirts with collars and comfortable shoes.

Returning to UTemps

If you've previously worked with UTemps and would like to be placed back in the applicant pool, contact UTemps by e-mail or calling 512-232-TEMP (8367), and say that you've previously worked as a UTemp and would like to be placed back into the pool. If it turns out that it's been too long since your last assignment, you may have to complete all or some of the required forms again. A UTemps counselor will get back to you with further information.
