Diversity Education Initiatives
Thank you for your interest in Diversity Education Initiatives! We look forward to working with staff, faculty, students, and community members to foster the development of inclusive community.
DEI is a unit of Campus Diversity and Strategic Initiatives (CDSI), a portfolio within the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement. CDSI supports and enhances an equitable campus culture at The University of Texas at Austin by engaging in divisional strategic planning, campus diversity planning, campus climate incident response, diversity education, research and special projects.
“The level of expertise and focus on research is exactly what we searched for in a higher education partner in this work. DEI has provided our district leaders with a great foundation for being self-aware about the decisions they make for our students.”

Mission Statement
Diversity Education Initiatives promotes learning that critically examines multiple
identities and perspectives in order to foster a climate of inclusive excellence at The
University of Texas at Austin and in surrounding communities.
History of DEI
Diversity Education Initiatives (originally named the Diversity Institute) was
established in 1995 as a division of the Center for Social Work Research as a
collaborative, multidisciplinary project of faculty, staff, students and community
members based in the School of Social Work at The University of Texas at Austin. The Diversity
Institute served to advance better understanding and more effective working
relationships among the unique culture of society. The Diversity Institute assisted
various organizations to achieve cultural competence by providing professional
consultation and constructive services responsive to the needs of diverse groups. In
addition to training, the Diversity Institute engaged in policy review and assessment.
In the fall of 2007, the Diversity Institute was newly housed under the Division of
Diversity and Community Engagement and renamed the Diversity Education Institute
to emphasize it’s new focus on educating the community about social justice issues and
supporting educators working in this area. In 2011 the Diversity Education Institute was renamed Diversity Education Initiatives reflecting the broader reach of educational programming occurring throughout the division, at the University and in the community.
