Film Series Explores African Diaspora

Adam Williams, Radio-TV-Film graduate student, with support from the Center for African and African American Studies and the Black Graduate Student Association, presents a documentary series: "Africans throughout the Diaspora: Contemporary and Collective Oppression 500 Years Later." The series will run through both the fall and spring semesters.

The contemporary documentaries feature issues and experiences that impact Africans throughout the world. Each screening highlights a specific theme to increase awareness and promote critical dialogue. The events are followed by a discussion led by experts and scholars in black history.

The fall documentary series includes:

Sept. 29: "History from an Afrocentrist Perspective," featuring "A Great and Mighty Walk"

Oct. 13: "Black Women and Sexual Politics," featuring "No: The Rape Documentary"

Oct. 27: "Beauty, Idealism, Colorism and the 'Black Hair' Industry," featuring "Nappy Roots: A Journey Through Hair-itage," "Black Hair: The Korean Takeover" and "A Girl Like Me"

Nov. 3: "Black Manhood, Masculinity and Hip-Hop," featuring "Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes" and "Favela Rising"

Nov. 3: "Black Gang Cultivation, Crime, the Prison Industrial complex and Economics," featuring "Bastards of the Party"

Dec. 1: "Spirituality, Expression, Libations and Resistance Throughout the Diaspora," featuring "Fela Kuti: Music is the Weapon and Rize" (or) "Africa Unite"
