Texas Exes Awards Highest Honor to Liberal Arts Alumni
Two alumni recognized for professional achievement and service to the university
AUSTIN, Texas -Oct. 16, 2008- The Texas Exes announced the recipients of the Distinguished Alumnus Award, the association's highest honor for alumni who have distinguished themselves professionally and through service to the university. The six honorees for 2008 include two alumni of the College of Liberal Arts.
Salam Fayyad (Ph.D. Economics, '86) is an economist and political reformer who was appointed prime minister of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) in 2007 as part of President Mahmoud Abbas' emergency government. He has led the PNA through a series of sweeping economic and political reforms and is regarded in international circles as one of the best hopes for peace between Palestine and Israel.
Linnet Frazier Deily (B.A. Government, '67) has served as the U.S. ambassador to the World Trade Organization in Geneva, Switzerland, vice chairman of Charles Schwab Corp., and as a member of the university's Board of Regents. She has pursued a career in international banking and investments, rising to become president and CEO of First Interstate Bank of Texas. Fortune Magazine named her one of the "50 Most Powerful Women in Business" in 2000.
Texas Exes will honor the recipients at a ceremony on Oct. 17 at the Austin Hilton Hotel. Tickets may be purchased for $175 by calling Stephanie Perez, Texas Exes administrative assistant, at 512-471-8098. The distinguished alumni will be recognized the following day at the UT-Missouri football game.
