Discussion Examines Indian Nurses in the U.S. Workforce

Date: November 21
Location: Avaya Auditorium (ACES), Room 2.302
Time: 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM

The Center for Asian American Studies presents "I Want to See a Real Nurse," a discussion with Sheba George, assistant professor of social science at Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science. The discussion will explore the challenges Indian immigrant nurses face in the U.S. workforce.

Building on her book "When Women Come First: Gender and Class in Transnational Migration," George posits that Indian immigrant nurses face a number of challenges, including racialization at work, distrust among patients and colleagues, stereotypical expectations of emotional labor and the impact of pre-migration Indian work experiences and training, shaped by unique ethnic and professional cultures.

George researches race, class and gender inequities and health disparities. She examines the medical encounters between international medical graduates, who comprise 25 percent of the U.S. medical workforce, and their underserved patient populations.

The free event is co-sponsored by the Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention in Underserved Populations and the School of Nursing.
