At The University of Texas at Austin, the health and well-being of our community is promoted by the health care services and programs offered on campus by the Counseling and Mental Health Center, University Health Services, Recreational Sports and Human Resource Services. Whether it's for an immunization or an educational program, the university has top-notch health professionals in all fields that assist our students, faculty and staff to maintain a healthy, happy lifestyle.
University Health Services
University Health Services (UHS) helps keep students healthy while they focus on their studies. Students can expect the same types of services from UHS that they receive from their family doctor.
Clinical services include general medical care, as well as an urgent care clinic and specialty clinics for women’s health, sports medicine, and immunizations and allergy shots. Nurses staffing the Nurse Advice Line at 512-475-NURS (6877) can provide guidance to ill or injured students 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
UHS Pharmacy staff can fill prescriptions for students, staff and faculty that have been written by any health care provider licensed to practice in the United States. The pharmacy also carries over-the-counter medications, personal care items and health aids. The UHS Pharmacy accepts most major prescription drug insurance cards, allowing you to pay the same amount at UHS as you would in your regular pharmacy.
UHS and the UHS Pharmacy are in the Student Services Building (SSB) at 100 W. Dean Keaton St. Students may schedule appointments by calling 512-471-4955 or visiting University Health Services.
Insurance
University students are not automatically enrolled in an insurance plan. All registered students who take credit courses and pay the required fees are eligible to enroll in the student health insurance plan approved by the University of Texas System.
In addition, students appointed to work in an academic title for 20 hours a week for at least 4.5 months are eligible for the same insurance benefits as other employees.
Students without health insurance can use UHS. However, students may need medical care when UHS is closed, require specialty services not provided at UHS or suffer an illness or injury that requires an emergency room visit or hospitalization. UHS recommends that students have insurance coverage for these occasions, whether through the student health insurance plan or through another provider. Read more about health insurance and UHS.
Counseling and Mental Health Center
The Counseling and Mental Health Center (CMHC) helps students with their personal concerns so they can meet the daily challenges of student life. CMHC provides short-term individual counseling, psychiatric services and group counseling. The center regularly offers group meetings designed for graduate students and has a self-guided MindBody lab to help students learn relaxation techniques and biofeedback. CMHC is staffed by psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers and other mental health professionals.
CMHC also offers telephone counseling, a confidential service that offers an opportunity for students to talk with trained counselors about their problems and concerns. A counselor is available 24 hours a day, every day of the year, including holidays. You can call when you want, at your convenience, in the privacy of your home.
The number is 512-471-CALL (2255).
CMHC also addresses issues of dating/relationship violence, sexual violence and stalking through its Voices Against Violence program.
The CMHC is in the Student Services Building,100 W. Dean Keaton Street, on the fifth floor. Students may schedule appointments or learn more by calling 512-471-3515 or visiting Counseling and Mental Health Center.
Recreational Sports
Recreational Sports (RecSports) facilities, services and programs are available to all students during any semester for which they are registered, beginning the first day of classes through the day before classes begin the following semester. Staff, faculty and community members may join RecSports for a fee. Additional fees are charged to participate in some programs.
RecSports provides access to 500,000 square feet of indoor space, 40 acres of outdoor activity space and 10 facilities on and off campus. Through RecSports, you can join clubs ranging from dance and tennis to roller hockey and water polo, play basketball at Gregory Gym, swim laps at the Aquatic Center and work out at Bellmont Hall.
Human Resources Services
Human Resource Services (HRS) creates a safe and healthful environment for the university community. HRS provides HealthPoint, a program for staff and faculty that includes the Occupational Health Program, which promotes work-place safety, treats minor work-related injuries and illnesses and provides health risk counseling to improve overall health and well-being, and the Employee Assistance Program, which provides counseling services to help faculty and staff face challenges and improve health, well-being and effectiveness. HRS offers work/life balance and wellness resources.
