COLLEGE ADMISSION TESTS

Undergraduate Admission Tests

  • Advanced Placement Examinations (AP)

AP Examinations are offered once a year in May, usually in high schools that offer College Board Advanced Placement courses. The exams are not offered on the UT Austin campus. Although determined by each school giving the test, registration deadlines are no later than March. Test results are available early in July. Please visit the College Board's Web site for current test registration fees.

The AP Examinations are based on course descriptions prepared by The College Board. A course description, which includes sample questions, is available at the College Board Web site.

  • SAT Reasoning Test

The Office of Admissions realizes that test scores aren't everything. That's why SAT I and ACT scores are just one of the academic factors Admissions considers when reviewing student applications. Prospective students can take either test as many times as they like to get a score they're satisfied with; just be sure the Office of Admissions receives your highest score directly from the testing agency.

When reviewing your application, Admissions will consider your one highest composite score - either SAT or ACT - from any single test date. (Remember that the last time you can take either test to be sure your scores will reach UT Austin by the application deadline is December of your senior year. See the Office of Admission's Application Requirements section for more details.)

Although most applicants do not have to submit any SAT Subject Test scores when applying for admission, applicants seeking admission to the College of Engineering as freshmen must submit scores on the SAT Subject Test in Mathematics Level 1 or 2 to the Office of Admissions. See the "Special Provisions - Engineering" page for details.

  • SAT Subject Tests

Before students can register for most beginning-level mathematics courses (M 305 G or higher), UT requires most students to take the College Board SAT Subject Test in Mathematics Level 1 or 2. The scores from either of these tests will be used to place students in appropriate courses.

We urge students to take these two tests at a College Board Test Center in October, November, December, or January of their senior year. There are several advantages to taking these tests at a College Board Test Center:

    1. Students will pay only $20 to take the Math test at a College Board Test Center. If you take it at UT Austin, you will pay $35 for each test.

    2. You will probably be more relaxed if you take the test in a College Board Test Center, which will likely be your own high school.

    3. Most high schools take the College Board test dates into account when planning their school activities.

    4. If you take this test in a College Board Test Center, you will probably have more time for orientation activities when you visit UT Austin for summer orientation.

College Board test dates and registration deadlines for the SAT Subject tests are listed at College Board Online . You may pick up registration packets from your high school counselor.

Be certain to have your scores reported to UT Austin by listing 6882 on your registration form.

If you plan to attend summer orientation, we recommend you take the test in October, November, December, or January of your senior year so that UT Austin will have your scores by the time you attend summer orientation. If you take the tests during the May administration, do not plan to attend orientation before mid-June since UT may not have your scores by then. Scores from the June administration will probably not arrive in time for any of the summer orientation sessions.

If you have not taken the tests by January, you may take the tests on the UT Austin campus during summer orientation.

If you have taken the tests at a College Board Test Center and you want to try to improve your scores, you may take them again at UT Austin prior to registration. UT Austin will accept the highest score regardless of when or where it was earned.
